What are the most common reasons for a broken tooth?

Oral health has a primary importance in our life. Along with every other thing, people need to take care of their oral hygiene in order to enhance their overall health. When neglected, you may face a multitude of teeth and gum-related problems. Broken teeth are one such common issue faced by people. Even though we have a strong protective layer of enamel around our teeth, they are bound to get chipped, cracked, or broken at times. There can be multiple reasons behind this issue and one needs to get to the roots of the problems to find a cure for it.

As suggested by madison dental spa, some of the most common reasons for a broken tooth are:

  • Ageing: It is one of the most common and inevitable reasons behind broken teeth. With age, the gums along with the protective layer of enamel get weak and hence the grip and strength of the teeth loosen. This leads to eminent cracks and chips in the teeth. One starts to use fake teeth in old age to help with eating and chewing.
  • Teeth Grinding: A lot of people have this habit of grinding their teeth. It either happens during sleep when they are unconscious of doing it or sometimes they do it consciously. It increases the pressure on the tooth and causes harsh friction which leads to the separation of little bits and pieces of teeth over time.
  • Accidents: Another reason behind broken teeth is accidents. It is common for children to fall down and hit their chin or jaw in the corners which causes their teeth to either chip or detach completely. Moreover, even as adults, people tend to damage or lose their teeth because of a blow to the mouth. It may be because of car accidents, sports accidents, fist fights, or something related to it.
  • Chewing on Hard Food: It is not that usual, but people also break their teeth when chewing on Hard food materials like ice, nuts, or hard candy. With the increased pressure on the tooth and with a combination of loosened gums, the tooth either cracks down or detaches completely.

These form some of the most common reasons for breaking a tooth. Additionally, sometimes the overdone fillings of a tooth cavity also lead to cracks and chips or when there is an abrupt change in temperature in the mouth. One needs to look out for accidents or things that hamper one’s oral health. With healthy teeth, you’ll be able to smile brightly and be confident about your appearance.
